Missing the Monopoly

Ah for the good old days. Once upon a time there was only one choice. No confusion about the widespread proliferation of telecom companies, as is the case with our clear and present twenty-first century. Back in the day, there was only AT&T. A group of famous British comics set the standard about that era when they asked the rhetorical questions paraphrased thusly: which telecom provider will you choose? AT&T or AT&T? So now our situation when it comes to picking a telecom provider is- which of the seemingly millions of providers will you choose? Gone is the simplicity of yesterday. Welcome the complex world of changing communications options.

Wasn’t it Walden that stated, ‘it could be that New York and Texas have no information of importance to exchange’? Most, of course, will disagree with this interesting observation. After all, the box scores of the Giants-Astros games are of paramount importance. Other than this indispensible information, there does not appear to be any facts from Texas or other distant ports of call that require our immediate attention. Most will note the indefensible nature of this position but the enlightened few will see the reason behind this notion. The word notion is of course a favorite concept for one popular talk show host. Let us then celebrate this hard won freedom of choice, even as we struggle with how to come to terms with it. Which of the many telecoms will you choose then? None of the above? Telegraphy never looked so inviting.
